Book Club

November 9, 2018 @ 2:00 pm

Friday, November 9 in the church lounge at 2 o’clock.
The book to be discussed is “Educated”, a non-fiction memoir currently on the bestseller list. First time author Tara Westover was raised by survivalist parents living in the remotest areas of the mountains of Idaho. Although she was taught unusual practical skills for surviving in the wilderness, she was never exposed to formal education of any sort. As a teenager she became interested in attending college and began to teach herself enough academics to pass the ACT exams. In college she faced challenges in adjusting to an entirely new way of life and learning, and she presented her professors with challenges to their method of teaching. This is a compelling book and of special interest to teachers and parents. It should stimulate conversation about what topics should be taught, how do children learn, and how can teachers become more effective. John Dewey, considered the “father” of modern educational theory, famously wrote that “the process and the goal of education are one and the same thing”, and this book vividly illustrates that philosophy.
This book promises to stimulate much interesting conversation. New members are always welcome. Interested people can attend one meeting if a particular book interests them, now and then as their schedule allows, or regularly.
